Germany is the largest economic power within the EU and despite a high structural unemployment rate of 10%, there are many jobs available in Germany. The German economy is still a major source of mechanical engineering, aerospace and automotive products. The chemical, pharmaceutical and polymer industries are huge, as are the electromechanical, electrical and electronics sector.There are constant shortages in IT personnel and also in bio engineering. However, don't think that it is easy to get a job in Germany. It is not. Selection and employment requirements are exacting and being able to speak and write German is a must, if you want to work for a German employer.

Getting rental housing is expensive and a major problem, especially in urban areas like Munich, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Frankfurt, Hamburg and some other cities, but a bit less so in Berlin. The former Eastern part of Germany has significant structural unemployment, in some areas as high as 20% and jobs there are hard to come by. Although, labor laws have been relaxed, making hiring and firing somewhat easier, job security is still something German workers at all levels want. And, they are willing to trade some earnings for that. But, once you are employed by a German company, you enjoy good health services with good insurance at a reasonable price and, relatively speaking, long periods of paid vacation. The demands on your technical skills though, maybe substantial.

The Foreign Population in Germany

Relatively speaking, within the European Union and EFTA, Germany, as a percentage of its total population, has a moderately large foreign population of 8.8% (end 2008). Of the 16 Laender (States), the ones with the numerically largest number of foreigners are Baden Wuertemberg, Bavaria and North-Rhine Westphalia. Each have over one million foreigners. Though, in terms of percentages, Berlin with 14% has the largest number of foreigners. But compared to neighboring Switzerland, with its 22% foreigners, this is still relatively small! Most foreigners live in the former West-German Laender, where the majority of the jobs are.

The German immigration and naturalization law has been overhauled and simplified. Although, it is still not easy for a non EU/EFTA citizen, to get a job and residence permit in Germany. If you offer a high level of relevant education, a solid period of professional experience and fluent German, you might have a chance. German Executive Recruiters

German executive recruiters and headhunters have, because of data protection laws clear limits about what they can do and where they cross the line of data protection laws. They cannot agressively pursue potential candidates, in the way it is done in the USA and other Anglosaxon countries. They have also limits about what data they can hold about candidates on a permanent basis. This has historical reasons and until relatively recently, only the state employment offices (Arbeitsamt), could keep data on employees.

This has consequences for candidates. As a general rule, German executive recruiters will not respond to candidates sending in unsolicited resumes, unless they have an assignment from an employer that exactly fits the unsolicited resume supplier. Bombarding executive recruiters with your resume will therefore not help you much! German executive recruiters, much more so than in the USA and the UK, work for employers and not so much for employees!

Germany is a High Tax Country

One thing you should consider is that Germany is a high tax country. While health services and higher education are heavily subsidized, university education being almost free, taxes and other deductions (unemployment insurance, pension, accident insurance etc) on a Euro 100,000 annual income will be around 40% of your income. In addition VAT, the EU sales tax, is 20%.

Advice on getting a Job in Germany

Until recently, we gave free advice on how to go about, getting a job in Germany and the EU. But since the middle of 2009 we are being overwhelmed with request. On some days, we receive over 200 e-mails per day, asking for information about the EU, and, within the EU, especially Germany and the Netherlands. We want to give a reasonable assessment on whether a person, especially those from non EU/EFTA areas, have a chance of getting an employer to apply for a work permit and then being able to work in Germany. This is not an easy or cheap process. Because we have to pay an increasing number of people, we are forced to charge a small amount for such advice. We can cannot guarantee that you will get a job. Nor can we guarantee, that you get a work permit. Though generally, if you find a job and you are highly qualified, the work and residence permit is not a problem. But we can improve your chances and, tell you what you will find in terms of quality of life and the general job situation. We will not apply on your behalf and to whom you apply for a job is up to you. Your should also be aware that most jobs will require fluency in German. High School knowledge will not do for that.
