If you
are not a EU/EFTA citizen and you intend to
arrive in Spain and start looking for work, even, if you
are fluent in Spanish, you will find it really hard. The
exception would be, if you are better or more qualified
than all the other Spaniards looking for work, or offer
a specialty, in programming or other IT work.
But being better qualified than Spaniards is rather
difficult. Spaniards are competent, well trained, have
good command of their own language (which for many
English speaking people appears to be problematic) and
are very hard working. University courses in
Spain take five years to complete, and not four like in
the United States. Though the Bologna Reforms
have changed some of the content. The Spanish students
also all finishes with a thesis and have therefore a
similar, and usually higher quality general education ,
than those completing Master's Degrees here in the United
States.

If you
are from outside the EU/EFTA countries, the paper
work a company needs to complete for you to work
in Spain represents an obstacle in itself.
It will prefer hiring a well qualified Spaniard
then someone from a country that is not part of
the European Union. If you
are a citizen of a EU/ETFA country, You need a DNI
Extanjero and be registered at the
Social Security Office. To get a DNO Extanjero
you need an EU/EFTA Passport. You then have the
same chances of getting a job as those of a
qualified Spaniard.

If you want a job in Spain you should
start looking in the two largest cities: Madrid or
Barcelona. Most foreign subsidiaries are there and they
are the two cities with most job offerings. You can try
Bilbao, Valencia, Sevilla or Alicante, but it will be far
more difficult.
Having
a local a cell phone is very important. When you
send your résumé you must have a direct contact number
in Spain. If a company is interested they will call you.
Spanish companies companies want the least problems to
get you to work for them while, if you already live in
Spain, they will see you as international and open
minded, as well as a risk taker.
If you
try newspapers, you will find two good specialized
newspapers: Laboris which is
published every Saturday and Segunda Mano which comes out
every Friday. On Sundays, there are job postings in El Pais and La Razon, the Madrid
dailies. During the week, there are hardly any job
adverts in those, so wait until the weekend.
You will
find that, in many instances, Spanish people obtained
their job, because a "friend of their cousin"
works there. To get these contacts, as a non Spaniard, is
rather more difficult. The best and most efficient
method, is the good combination of the three methods:
Internet, newspapers and contacts. Below are a few
internet sites that might help.
You
should not forget that both Spain and Portugal have
an almost permanent relatively high unemployment rate or
around 10%. This is especially true amongst
young graduates. There are many, and highly complicated,
structural reasons for that. If you are
interested in the reasons, read some books on the Iberian
economies.

quite difficult to find recruiters working in Puerto
Rico. Whether this is done in Spanish or in English. Yet,
Puerto Rico is the largest and only Spanish speaking area
in the USA (though, not a state). But, if you live on the
mainland, it might as well not exist, so little is it
mentioned here. This is really regrettable, since it is a
beautiful country, with an interesting history and a
great deal of culture.
