Joblinks to Swiss
Companies, Recruiters, Employment Agencies and
Headhunters Being allowed to work and reside
in Switzerland
Switzerland,
with 7.6 million people, has a foreign population of over
20 percent. The country is not part
of the European Union, though it has a set
of bilateral agreements with the EU,
that make working for citizens from other EU member
states possible without any hindrance. The same does not
apply for citizens from non EU countries
such as the USA, Canada and Australia. Unless you are an
executive transferee (i.e. a person sent by the parent
company to do a management or technical job in the Swiss
subsidiary), it is very difficult to get a work
and residence permit for Switzerland. There are
some exceptions for people who have very special and rare
skills for which there is a shortage in Switzerland. But
the permits for those are limited to around 4,000 permits
a year. As you can imagine, in a highly industrialized
country like Switzerland, these are used up and allocated
very quickly.
|
|
Though
their work permits are often limited to 18
months, without the option of renewal. If you
find an employer willing to offer you a job (for
instance in nursing or in the IT sector, where
there is a shortage of available labor), then
your employer has to apply for a Residence/Working
Permit B that has to be renewed annually.
After five years, provided your behavior has been
immaculate, you can convert that into a Permit
C, which is something like the Green Card in
the USA In other words, you gain permanent
residence status. |
| There are a few other
possibilities, such as seasonal workers
in the hotel industry and agriculture, and stagaire
jobs (training jobs) for which time limited
work permits can be obtained. The official
languages in Switzerland are German (the spoken
language is Swiss German with lots of variations
- about 63%), French (27%), Italian (8%) and
Romantsch (2% or less). |
| Many
people, especially in banking, business and
obviously the tourist industry, science and
engineering, speak English. The Swiss travel a
lot and it is not uncommon to meet a secretary
who speaks three languages and has been all
around the world. The general education level is
extremely high and there is an extensive
apprenticeship system for non university
graduates. Housing costs
in Switzerland are extremely high. Switzerland is
a country of "renters" and
comparatively few people own their own home.
Though, condominium purchases have increased
|
|
| during the last few years. In some
cities, such as Geneva and Zurich it is extremely
difficult to find good and reasonably priced
apartments. As a general rule you have to expect
to pay about 30% of your salary for your
apartment. The Swiss work
generally longer hours than the rest of
Europe, usually about 42 hours a week.
They also have less paid vacation, three weeks
per year for the first five years of a working
relationship and four thereafter. Though, the
legal requirement is three weeks only.

will have to go to http://www.zuerich.info,

though, municipal information is found under http://nameofmunicipality.ch. If you

There
are regional JOB SITES, but they are usually in
the respective local language (i.e. German,

is arbeit.sg ("work").
The site advertises jobs in the Cantons of St.

Thurgau (all about 50 miles east of Zurich
towards Lake Constance). The catchment area is in
and around the City of St. Gallen (see http://www.stadt24.ch for the
politics, cultural and social issues - obviously
in German!). There are all sorts of jobs on offer
but all job descriptions are in German. We can
advise you, against payment of a small fee on how
to go about to get a job. For some jobs you can
apply in English, but others will require fluent

Ways
of finding a job in Switzerland
There
are several ways to find a job in Switzerland. The easiest, but not the
most effective, and rather expensive way is to take out
an advert in one of the daily Swiss newspapers.
Nationwide read newspapers with good job advertising
pages, for the German speaking part of Switzerland, are
the Tagesanzeiger and to some
extent, the NZZ (Neue Zuercher
Zeitung - a sort of "The Times" of Zurich). For
the French speaking part, the newspaper would be 24 heures . There is also the
weekly Weltwoche for the German
speaking part. But advertisements are not cheap. They
appear once and cost between US$ 200 and 500 (Sfr 250 to
about 600) for a single issue. Approaching executive
search consultants is another possibility. Many Swiss
search consultants though will only want your CV for a specific
job for which they already have an employer assignment. They also tend
to avoid offering people who need a work permit (i.e. non
EU/EFTA citizens) to employers.
You can
take out an advertisement in these pages. We have just
started a new product line, a short job
search advert (150 words). The costs are a mere
US$ 9.99 and the advert will stay up for 60 days. Click
here to see one and to order and advertisement. We have about
1,400 unique visitors a day on the Swiss page, about half
of them commercial and employer visits. There are other
sites, though, they are considerably more expensive.
Once you
have placed an advert, you will need a good
Curriculum Vitae. The Swiss version of that, like
the German one, is a sort of all exclusive "exhibit
of yourself". It is not
an American personal sales document! To get
help for that, you can start with the links below or go
directly to our Resume
Advice Page.
